What is a native plant?
A native plant is one that has naturally evolved in a specific geographic region or ecosystem. These plants becoming an integral part of that local environment. They are adapted to the local climate, soils, and other native species, providing essential habitat and food for local wildlife, pollinators, and other animals. Unlike non- native plants, which are introduced from other areas, native plants form the foundation of the local food web and support the unique biodiversity of their native range. We live in a state that covers space vertically allowing it to have a wide range of climates. Keeping that in mind when looking for native additions to our gardens. Just because a plant is native to California doesn’t mean it will do well in our backyard. Please consider zone and climate needs for all your plant friends, native or not.
