Summer Bulbs

Spring bulbs are on hand and the dahlia collection is particularly stunning this year. Dahlias are brilliant, beautiful flowers that grow from tubers that look like sweet potatoes. If you haven't tried them, you will find dahlias are easy and extremely rewarding. Flower colors range across the full spectrum, color is fabulous, but the bloom size of some of these is amazing, some varieties reaching 10" across.

Plant dahlias in a full to morning sun spot with soil that drains well. Plant them as the soil begins to warm is spring.  Dig a big hole and improve the soil with a generous amount of Gold Rush soil amendment. Add Master Nursery Bulb Food, or Bone Meal and mix in the bottom of the hole and plant the tubers on their side 6" deep. Nurture them along with water and an additional feeding with Formula 49 as the buds form in summer. Watch for a spectacular summer display that will continue right into fall.

Dahlia
A striking accent for any garden or a container, the Dahlia offers one of the largest selections of forms, colors and sizes of any flower. It also has one of the longest blooming seasons and is an ideal cut flower because it is so long lasting. This beautiful sun loving perennial bloomer is the national flower of Mexico and the official flower of the City of Seattle. We offer Dahlias in a wide variety of heights and forms to suit any garden or landscaping theme.

Gladiolus
Large, thick stems with six to eight tightly packed blossoms on only one side. The blossoms shape and texture vary from fringed to ruffled to trumpet shaped to rosebuds. Their bright and dramatic colors make great garden accents for the long, hot summer days. If you plant Gladiolus every two weeks you will have a kaleidoscope of very colorful flowers throughout the summer. They are ideal in a sunny massed garden or landscape planting, and have unsurpassable beauty as a long-lived cut flower.

Lily of the Valley
One of the first to appear in the spring, the shade loving Lily Of The Valley has broad, spear-like foliage and fragrant little white bell-shaped flowers hanging, each bell with the edges turned back with six small scallops. This popular garden perennial is also prized as a cut flower because of its unique look and sweet perfume. These flowers are VERY popular; available only once a year; and sell out quickly.

Tuberous Begonias
Tuberous begonias bloom throughout the summer. Ideal for north facing areas, they thrive in shady spots where few other plants with long bloom periods and showy flowers can grow. Versatile, they work equally well as container plants on patios and porches, in hanging baskets, and as bedding plants. Their beautiful flowers come in a variety of colors and forms. Red, orange, yellow, white, salmon and pink blooms may be single or double; they may be plain, ruffled or fringed; their petals may have margins, crests or blotches of contrasting color.
